Gazing blankly into space.
The anticipated first Visualogue IT session was presented by Naoko Fukasawa.
Sitting center stage in the cavernous C2 Hall, flanked by the giant red
Visualogue graphics, Fukasawa-san was introduced as a poet for his ability
to pull an 'essence' from a living event. Apologizing for his product-centric
content in a graphic design conference, he went on to share the processes
he uses to create. He invited us to 'stare blankly into space' at a series
of vignettes taken with a regular video camera. This phrase represents
the creative metaphor for his technique of observation and is one of
a series of presented frameworks used to help understand the physical
world around him. His products are designed from 'basic information'
before him and we were invited to watch and think together where this
information. And we did, with great interest to which the quietness in
the cavernous hall could attest. The graphic designers present, although
in a different professional field, had no trouble understanding his sources
of inspiration. The second half of the session included the different
areas in which he designs: E-fashion, interaction design, and interface
design just to name a few. A key theme which reappeared in many, if not
all, of his products was the concept of design dissolving into behavior.
Fukusawa believes design should not be recognized or visible. And to
render his products invisible, he observes how people interact with an
object and then brings that insight into his conceptualizations and solutions.
