Introduction to the Japan Patent Office:
The industrial property rights system (a general term for the systems of patents, utility models, designs and trademarks) aims to contribute to the development of industry by promoting protection and utilization of the fruits of intellectual creation such as inventions, devices and designs. The Japan Patent Office (JPO) is driving forward the following activities towards the development of Japanese industries; (1) granting of exclusive rights (e.g. patent rights), (2) planning/designing of industrial property rights policies, (3) international cooperation/negotiations, (4) improvement of the industrial property rights system and its operation, and (5) dissemination of industrial property rights information.
