Born in Japan in 1956. Graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1980. Fujihata is a highly esteemed artist at home and abroad. He is one of the pioneers who developed a new form of art using digital technology. Not limited to CG or works on the computer, Fujihata's works now include interactive installations using digital networking that involve viewers. At the YOKOHAMA 2001, Fujihata will install a 3D navigation system. The system allows viewers to operate it themselves and move around in the scenery on the screen.
Fujihata was awarded the Golden Nica Prize at the ArsElectronica, Linz, Austria in 1996. He was invited to Karlsruhe's Center for Art and Media, ZKM as an artist-in-residence in 1998. At ZKM, he created a networkinstallation "Nuzzle Afar." The installation was exhibited in the Netherlands, Austria and Japan (Keio University's Shonan Fujisawa Campus and the NTT InterCommunication Center / ICC). From 2000, series of projects "Field-Works" which uses GPS (Global Positioning System) and Video continues Tsumari, Echigo, Lake Shinji, Matsue, Alsace, France, Essex, UK.
Fujihata is a professor at the Inter-Media Art department at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.
